During Emergency Preparedness Week, from May 5 to 11, Thorold Fire and Emergency Services will be sharing life-saving information on the City’s social media sites for residents.

“Many residents may not be fully educated on the importance of readiness during all four seasons when it comes to managing emergencies,” said Fire Chief Terry Dixon. “We face unique challenges in Ontario and need to practice emergency preparedness seasonally. This week we will share some important information on our social media sites outlining the steps involved to prepare you and your family.”

Emergency preparedness increases knowledge and reduces risks in an unforeseen event at anytime of the year. Residents can prepare themselves by:

1. Making a plan: Include actions that will help yourself and your family stay safe before, during, and after an emergency event.

2. Building a kit: Gather supplies that will enable you and your family to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in the event of an emergency.

3. Staying informed: Follow local authorities for up-to-date information and instructions. Be sure to include a portable, battery-operated radio in your emergency kit.

This annually designated week is a national effort led by Public Safety Canada, provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
