The number of trees that will provide greenery to downtown Thorold as a part of the remaking of the town's main street will now only feature 17 trees instead of the 32 trees originally suggested in the budget.

It was during a city council meeting earlier this spring that the tendered cost of the trees caused a stir among the members when they learned that installing the trees would come with a $640,000 price tag, due to the underground irrigation system.

Councilors asked staff to find ways to cut down the cost of the project, dubbed vital for the future of downtown by local stakeholders, which resulted in the number of trees being lowered to 17, saving roughly half of the initial estimate.

The makeover of Front Street is slated to finish in December.
