Many scientists have prophesized irreversible changes to the planet earth as a result of climate change. In Beyond Utopia, Tony Vandermaas takes it one terrifying step further.

Beyond Utopia is an action-packed adventure tale, and the Thorold author’s futuristic sequel to Dreams of Utopia.

Much like the characters in his novels, readers are sent hurtling headlong into a grim, post-apocalyptic world in both these imaginative time travel fantasies. Vandermaas creates an eerily believable existence, where humans become hunted, as well as hunters.

Beyond Utopia vividly forewarns what happens when earth and its remaining inhabitants are pitted against one another for basic shelter, food and water, in the aftermath of “The Event”—the end of civilization, caused by climate crises due to global warming.

When resourceful protagonists Devon and Sara set out to see who—and what—is left of their bleak world, they encounter eclectic bands of survivors—made up of heroes and villains—all of whom are forced to rely on their wits, skills and ultimately, each other, to avoid becoming obliterated.

Beyond Utopia is compelling—part cautionary tale, part old-time western; complete with exciting ambushes and shootouts.

Vandermaas takes turns poking fun at human foibles, while also celebrating the human spirit—triumphant acts of heroism and bravery against bullies, and a will to survive against all odds, making this book an appealing escapist experience.

Copies of Beyond Utopia cost $23.95 each, and are available by emailing the author at [email protected]

A savvy naturalist who is passionate about local history, Vandermaas has also authored a War of 1812 trilogy—three books of historical fiction.

All five of his books will be among the items available at the TCAG charity auction, held at 131 Richmond St. this Saturday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.
