CAA Niagara is reminding residents thinking of exploring Ontario this summer to take the necessary safety measures. Since the pandemic began, Niagara residents have been searching for new ways to enjoy the outdoors, and now with restrictions loosening and RV and car rentals available, more people are looking to get away.

Provincial parks, cottages and campgrounds have become increasingly popular this summer, as locals seek a quick and safe escape.

“Many in Niagara are planning road trips within the province this summer as a way to relax and spend time with family,” said Peter Van Hezewyk, President and CEO of CAA Niagara.” We want to make sure they and their vehicles are prepared.”

Here’s some advice to help you and your family enjoy a safe and healthy road trip:

Check your battery before hitting the road. The scorching summer heat taxes your vehicle’s battery, so you want to ensure it’s in good health before hitting the road.

Keeping clean during pit stops and refueling. It is vital to follow the recommended safety outlines by the province to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. Make sure to equip your vehicle with hand sanitizer, masks, gloves and disinfectant. If you are stopping for gas, wear gloves or clean your hands immediately after fueling up. If you are renting a car or RV, it’s a good idea to wipe down the inside with disinfectant before setting off.

Plan your trip. Some of your tried-and-true rest stops may be closed or offering limited hours or services. Check the stops along your route ahead of time so you know what is open. If you’re a CAA Niagara Member, check your towing coverage.

Give yourself time. Make sure to give yourself and your “bubble” plenty of time to reach your destination. The more time you have, the less rushed you’ll feel and the safer you’ll drive.

“Let’s all enjoy our summer getaways,” added Mr. Van Hezewyk. “But let’s do it in a safe and healthy way.”
