Do you know a Thorold resident who excels as an athlete?

Regional councillor Tim Whalen appeared at Thorold council last week, and the long-time Thorold Runway of Recognition committee member invited residents to submit their favourite Thorold athlete—past or present—for consideration for next year’s annual sports awards banquet. Nominations for the 2020 Runway of Recognition will be accepted until the deadline of Oct. 1, 2019, can be forwarded to Runway city council liaison Carmen DeRose, at [email protected]

Longo: Let there be lights

A serious accident that occurred recently at the corner of Sullivan Avenue and Pine Street prompted a resident to contact Coun. Anthony Longo about reinstalling traffic lights at the busy intersection.

“A resident was telling me with the construction of the new five-storey apartment building (near the corner), we will have even more traffic in September,” he said, asking if staff could investigate "and see it if warrants signalization.”

City CAO Manoj Dilwaria replied that he’s discussed the matter with the Region’s manager of engineering, who said “a study was done three years ago, and it wasn’t warranted, but the whole corridor will be looked at and if there is a need for a traffic signal, it will be brought forward.”

“Typically, we don’t do it when school is out,” he added, since the traffic is much different in the summer.

Coun. John Kenny wondered why the traffic lights that used to control the intersection were removed.

According to Dilwaria, a traffic volume count was done, resulting in the lights’ removal.

“We don’t want to have unwarranted signals because that creates congestion. We have done that analysis and at that time it was not warranted, but that doesn’t mean it’s not changed now.”

Parking problems on Ann Street

Coun. Jim Handley asked city staff to investigate parking problems experienced by Ann Street residents.

“At one time, the parking was on the north side then got switched to the south side,” he said. “Residents have notified me they weren’t told and it’s impeding their ability to enter and exit their driveways.”

Staff will bring forward a report to address the issue at the August 13 council meeting, and host a public information session in the neighbourhood in the near future.

Council approved Dana Price’s application as the newest Allanburg Community Centre board member.
