The Thorold Garden Club is expected to be officially recognized for its longevity and contributions to Thorold as soon as city council’s next meeting.

Appearing before council Tuesday, club president Leslie Daniels asked councillors to consider designating June 15 Thorold Horticultural Society Day as a means to recognize the club’s 90-year anniversary.

Daniels recalled the beginning of the club by quoting from a story which appeared in an edition of the Thorold Post newspaper dated Feb. 21, 1929: “A splendid turnout at Memorial Hall for the purpose of organizing a Thorold Horticultural Society.”

She also offered the club, which has rebranded itself the Thorold Garden Club in recent years, is interested in playing a role in any rejuvenation project planned for Battle of Beaverdams Park and is also interested in assisting the city in revamping the Richmond Street parkette (located at the corner of Pine Street and Richmond Street). She said the club would like to install a plaque at the parkette celebrating the club’s anniversary.

Mayor Terry Ugulini said council would consider a motion at its next meeting and promised to keep the group informed about any plans for the park and parkette.
