Niagara has 61 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 10 resolved as of Wednesday morning, according to regional statistics.
The figure is a sharp increase from Monday’s reported 34 confirmed cases, but on the national level, top doctors are advising that the numbers do not reflect the actual amount of cases active in the community.
Dr. Mustafa Hirji, Niagaras acting medical officer of health, said community transmission is now on the rise after a majority of the previous cases had connection to travel.
Niagara Health System who are still reporting deaths say a total of 4 have succumbed to the illness, up from the previous 2 that passed away after being infected.
The virus is being fought in several retirement- and nursing homes across the province, with a declared outbreak at Seasons Retirement Community.
Testing is still being done in primary- and hospital care as well as two designated testing locations set up in Niagara Falls and St Catharines.
The region also launched a self-assessment tool, meant to help residents determine when to seek further care.
