Despite rapidly increasing numbers of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Niagara region, Thorold DSBN trustee Nancy Beamer says the school year appears to be running with few larger disruptions.

Since the re-opening, cases have been found among either students or staff in at least six of DSBN's schools.

The latest to test positive were two individuals at Park Public School in Grimsby and Eden High School in St Catharines.

A statement from DSBN said students and staff who had been in close proximity to the two individuals have been instructed by public health to self-isolate, and the facilities are due for a deep cleaning.

"Overall, when you take a look at the number of cases compared to the number of students in our schools, I think we are still on a very safe path," Beamer told Thorold News.

"There is enough PPE for six months, and the measures we have been undertaking seem to be working well and students are getting more and more comfortable. So far I think that everyone is feeling pretty good about it."

But, Beamer admits, the recent surge in cases in the Niagara region and the rest of Ontario is ultimately what will govern how the rest of the school year will look for staff and students in the board schools.

At least four schools in the Niagara Catholic District School Board have also reported cases in Niagara Falls and St Catharines.

During a news conference on Monday, Ontario's Minister of Education said the province is committed to keeping schools open and did not signal and imminent plans to close down.
