As Thorold's Front Street gets its new face, Thorold city councilor Fred Neale says future projects need to take social distancing into account as Niagara moves toward a re-opening of the economy.

Thorold's Front Street was already looking at less traffic even before the pandemic, as the long-anticipated makeover was set to commence this spring.

Over the past weeks, crews have been working on the redoing.

On Tuesday night, city councilor Fred Neale raised the point of designing sidewalks and public spaces to make sure social distancing is taken into consideration.

"I want to make sure it is taken into consideration," said Neale.

Sean Dunsmore, manager of engineering said that the sidewalks on Front Street are in the 10-foot range and that bump-outs on the corners at intersections will measure around 15 feet.

"Any changes that will happen to sidewalks are going to be in the 8 ft range, and Front Street is way beyond that. I don't think there are any real design changes needed," said Dunsmore.
