Cobblestone Gardens says its first case of COVID-19 during the entire pandemic was found when a staff member was tested in its ongoing surveillance testing of all staff before the weekend.

The person last worked on January 18 and was asymptomatic when they went into self-isolation.

No other staff or residents have tested positive for the virus, but an outbreak was declared in the entire facility due to its small size.

'We continue to take all protective measures, going above and beyond what is recommended by Public Health. Out residents and our staff is our top priority.' said Jeanie Redekop, administrator at Cobblestone Gardens, in a comment to Thoroldnews.com.

There are currently around 30 active health-care outbreaks across Niagara, and the number of residents who have tested positive and later died has been rising dramatically in recent weeks.

Public Health said it has vaccinated residents and staff at all long-term care facilities, and are moving to high-risk retirement residents next.
