Students and school staff in the region faced a hard blow on Tuesday as education minister Stephen Lecce announceed the continued closure of publicly funded schools in Ontario for the rest of the year.

The school year, already strongly disrupted by the labor dispute between teachers unions and the province, has to a large extent been conducted online.

In a statement, the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) said its shools and teachers will continue to engage students with online education from their teachers and through the DSBN Learn From Home website.

“Our students have been resilient in dealing with the change from classroom to virtual learning, and our parent community have supported their childrens efforts; we sincerely appreciate the work of our parent community,” the statement said, and continued:

“This summer, learning will continue for DSBN students with our summer learning program. This program will feature a broad range of subjects for all grades if they choose to enhance their learning during the summer. It will feature a much larger number and variety of credits than would typically be offered.”

Niagara Catholic District School Board posted a statement reading:

“We know families have questions about how to complete registration for the 2020-2021 school year, and about retrieving items left behind when school ended for the March Break, and we will be in touch with families about these issues once plans have been finalized. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work out a system that will work well for our families and our staff. Please continue to stay well and safe.”
