Niagara Health CEO Tom Stewart has resigned from a number of health advisory boards, following a vacation trip to the Dominican Republic, as cases of COVID-19 were exploding in Ontario.

The top executive was on approved vacation between December 18 - January 5, when he traveled abroad, despite repeated messaging from virtually all levels of government, to avoid non-essential travel.

Stewart, who was a member of the provincial COVID-19 advisory table that monitors and advises the official pandemic response from the province, the Health Coordination table, as well as the Long term care Incident Management System table, says he's 'sorry.'

“I regret this non-essential travel and I’m sorry,” said Stewart in a statement from Niagara Health on Monday.

“Everyone should be avoiding non-essential travel now, including me.”

Stewart also serves as CEO for St Joseph's Health System in Hamilton.
