Another case COVID-19 has been found in a Thorold resident, today's report from the public health department reveals.
After a three-day streak of significantly higher numbers than previously this summer, NRPH is reporting an increase of 5 cases on Tuesday.
There are now 87 active cases in Niagara across all municipalities in the region except Wainfleet, Pelham, and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Two medical facilities are dealing with outbreaks.
Thorold's COVID-19 caseload has remained fairly steady over the summer with only occasional single increases but has increased by two cases in the latest surge.
The historic total in Thorold is now 34, and 1065 in the entire region.
Provincial update:
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 554 new COVID-19 cases in the province today.
The province has also confirmed four new deaths related to COVID, including two individuals between 60 and 79 years old and two individuals over 80 years old.
Today's provincial update states there were 38,375 tests processed in a 24-hour period, and there are 54,759 tests awaiting results.
Of today's 554 new cases, 86 per cent (479 cases) were reported by four of Ontario's 34 health units. Toronto reported 251 new cases, Ottawa reported 106 new cases, Peel reported 79 new cases, and York Region reported 43 new cases for today's update.
Forty-eight per cent (265 cases) of the new cases reported today are individuals between the ages of 20 and 39, and another 26 per cent (145 cases) are individuals between 40 and 59 years old.
There are currently 40 long-term care homes, 32 retirement homes and three hospitals in active COVID-19 outbreak status.
The province has also confirmed 64 new school-related cases including at least 37 students. There are now 308 school-related cases spread across 250 schools out of 4,828 schools in the province. There are two schools currently closed.
To date, the province has confirmed 51,085 cases of COVID-19, including 43,450 cases that have recovered, and 2,844 that have ended in death.
There are 4,791 active cases in Ontario, and approximately 1,800 of those are in Toronto. There are 137 people hospitalized with the coronavirus, including 30 COVID patients in intensive care units and 16 on ventilators.
The per cent positivity, that is the number of test results that are positive compared to the number of tests processed is hovering at about 1.2 per cent.
The province reported similar daily case numbers during the first case peak from April 20 to 26.
On April 21 the province reported 551 new cases, 38 deaths, and noted there had been 9,330 tests processed in a 24-hour period. By April 30, Ontario labs were processing around 19,000 test results per day, and daily case numbers ranged from 350 to 525. On April 21 there were 878 people hospitalized with COVID, including 243 patients in intensive care.
