The Fonthill Lions Club hosted their second drive-thru meal on Sunday, Jan. 17. The meal featured a half chicken dinner, roasted potatoes, coleslaw, bun, Swiss Chalet dipping sauce and rice pudding dessert for $15. Meals were pre-ordered and pre-paid to minimize contact and sold out a week in advance.

Original plans to have Pelham Fire Services onsite collecting donations to Fill-a-Boot for Pelham Cares needed to be postponed to ensure compliance with the most recent provincial COVID-19 restrictions and ensure all safely protocols were followed.

“These monthly drive-thru meals offer a great diversion from lockdown cooking, while supporting the Fonthill Lions,” said Don McGovern, one of the newest members of the Fonthill Lions.

Like many businesses, service clubs, and charity organizations, the Fonthill Lions’ fundraising efforts were thwarted by COVID-19. Most of their funding sources, including their 75th anniversary, were cancelled or postponed due to public safety measures, so the Lions are finding new allowable fundraisers such as drive-thru meals and bottle drives to raise money to support local community service.

Future drive-thru meals include a chilli dinner on Feb. 27 and a pasta dinner on March 27, with more meals being organized for the future.

Pleasantview Funeral Home is a proud sponsor of the Fonthill Lions drive-thru meals. Sobeys Fonthill is also providing ongoing donation support.

Hopefully these drive-thru meal fundraisers will remind people of our local thriving community spirit and service despite lockdown challenges. Just another reminder that “We Serve”, which is the global motto for Lions International, was created in 1954 by Lion Doug Stephenson, member of the Fonthill Lions. Today, in their 76th year, the Fonthill Lions still proudly boast of being the global “Motto Makers.”
