Canada Day in Beaverdams Park is canceled.

The City of Thorold says the limitations set out by the province on public gatherings and the health and wellbeing of staff and the public is their number one priority.

"This was an incredibly difficult decision to make, as the community looks forward to this event every year," Mayor Terry Ugulini said.

The announcement comes just a day after the 42nd annual Port Colborne days announced that the event would be canceled due to the ongoing situation, prompting a widespread outcry of disappointment, but also support for the decision.

The City of Thorold said they recognize the disappointment in the community and adds they are looking into alternative arrangements.

For next year, it is business as usual.

"Rest assured we will return in 2021."
