Niagara Public Health reports eight new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, but only an increase of three active cases.

One of the 60 cases that have not yet cleared up was found in a Thorold resident, regional statistics reveal.

In total, 30 Thorold residents have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic entered Niagara on March 13 with the region's first case.

Close contact with a previously known case remains the biggest category of transmission, followed by community transmission that accounts for close to one-third of new cases.

Niagara Health said yesterday that they have been experiencing a recent rush to their testing sites in St Catharines, Welland, and Niagara Falls which had spiked wait times.

On Friday Hotel-Dieu Shaver had been removed from the list of outbreaks in medical facilities, leaving only two active outbreaks in care homes, along with three smaller outbreaks across Niagara.

Public Health Ontario has reported 88 new cases of COVID-19 and zero deaths in today's update.
