With every change of season, we look forward to new beginnings, renewed traditions and of course, a lot of fun events. Port Robinson is a busy place all year but especially true in the fall and early winter months.

This edition of Port Robinson Proud column is dedicated to upcoming events and traditions. Without a doubt, we in Port Robinson love our traditions; the strings that bind us together, the events that remind us to gather together and have a little fun. A real perk of living in this tiny historical hamlet! Mark your calendar and come join us!

The Port Robinson Community Centre monthly meetings are open to everyone. Come see what this dynamic and hardworking board of volunteer members is doing in our community. Meetings are held the third  Monday of each month, except July and August.

This past Sunday Club Castropignano was the scene of our annual First Responders Appreciation Day, hosted by Pastor Clint Sears of Port Robinson Community Church (See story here).

On Friday, Dec. 13, at 6:30 p.m., the Port Robinson Community Centre and the Lend a Hand Puppets of Heartland Forest will be teaming up again for the annual  'Twas  the Night before Christmas (with a Port Robinson twist) puppet show and milk and cookies with Santa. It is a fun rollicking night with music, puppet show, and of course, a visit with Santa for the children.

Thorold Fire Station #3 is holding its annual Remembrance Day Service on Sunday Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. at the front pad of the fire station. This solemn event is a yearly tradition dating back decades of honouring veterans as well as those who gave their lives for our country. This year, there will be a luncheon at Bridge 12 Pub and Eatery right after the ceremony. Come join us for a drink or a bite to eat and meet our volunteer firefighters.

Speaking of Bridge 12 Pub, Halloween and Christmas traditions abound at Bridge 12. Check out their Facebook  page for all the details of upcoming events, including children’s parties, adult parties, the yearly Christmas Market, and more. Bridge 12 is a welcoming place for a great meal, a drink with friends, or a place to play pool or just visit for an ice cream cone on their summer patio. We hope that you will make Bridge 12 part of your Port Robinson tradition when you visit.

Port Robinson Proud also has a few traditions; this year the 4th  annual Christmas Cookie Exchange is taking place on Monday, Dec. 2 at the Port Robinson Community Centre at 6:30 p.m. Like a regular cookie exchange, everyone brings six dozen of one kind of cookie or square and takes home six dozen of an assortment of cookies for their holiday entertaining. The evening includes snacks, holiday music and lots of laughter. Just message Port Robinson Proud on Facebook to join in on the fun.

2019 marks the sixth year of the Port Robinson Annual Holiday Lights Contest. Homes and apartments decorate for Christmas with lights, displays, motion displays  and even music. Take a drive around Port Robinson this December and come see the brightest and most festive  area in Thorold.

Plenty is happening on both sides of Port Robinson. Over on the west end of town, Club Castropignano/Club C Event Centre will be hosting lots of events. On Nov. 1, take a trip back to the 80s, and for those of you who recall the days of the Aqua Duck in  Welland, AQUA BASH is taking place at 8 p.m. Come check out the bad hair and crazy fashion with lots of amazing music and food.

There will be a Music Trivia Night on Dec 5 -Toys and Trivia with Name This Tune Music Trivia, buffet dinner, trivia and lots of holiday cheer. Be sure to reserve early as this is a limited seating event.

Besides the natural beauty and charm of Port Robinson, it is a busy place all year but especially in the waning months of 2019. Come for a bike ride or a quick trip on our ferry Bridge-It before she closes for the season; stop in for the many events, or just enjoy the beauty along the canal as the leaves change, reminding us all to slow down and just enjoy life.
