Unicorns and more mythical March Break fun at Thorold Library

This March Break preview began during a day you’ll now remember as Ice Attack 2019 (li’l nod to Art Attack, for those who remember. Much cooler names can be submitted via email and may be judged at a later date with no prize reward). So it does seem a little odd to be presenting our “spring break” agenda. But let us remind you that two years ago we had a snow day halfway through the week. And March Break actually ends before spring’s official start. So now you know three things about us: we have a good memory, firm grasp on the seasons, and know how to ruin an otherwise anticipated event seemingly outside of winter’s grasp.

Break Week 2019 kicks off with Board Game Café on Monday, March 11. Participants will receive a free hot chocolate and tiny snack (you’ll still have to feed them at some point in the day) while participating in friendly competitions from the classic (i.e., our eight [!] versions of Monopoly) to the contemporary (such as the oddly infuriating “no thumbs” challenge, Get a Grip). Apart from being a fun way to pass time, meet new friends, and hold victory over your opponents (possibly while chanting “Winner, Winner!”), the often expertly veiled call for logic, strategic thinking, and critical reasoning skills ensure your little one is not only enjoying themselves, but also L. E. A. R. N.-ing (experienced Scrabblers will piece that one together).

Tuesday, March 12’s main event should explain why you’re looking at a photo of two stuffies in mythical horns. Should. Though we’d love to hear your initial theories. Bizzy and Maple (our library mascots) are already prepping for our highly anticipated Unicorn Party. Inordinate levels of make-believe came together to provide you with this program.  As well as the accompanying “promo pic.” And yes, Bizzy behaved like a total diva the entire shoot. Magical crafts, pin the horn on the unicorn, themed snacks (we were apparently quite peckish while finalizing the March Break schedule), and fun surprises will all be on hand. Register early because this one will fill up fast.

Likely our biggest event of the week is Wednesday’s special presentation from Therapy Tails Ontario (TTO). Attendees will enjoy an inspirational talk, followed by the opportunity to meet several teams of pups and companion human pals. If you’re not familiar with Therapy Tails programming, it’s been a TPL staple for many years now (every first Saturday of the month at 2 p.m.). Canine visitors can offer comfort and companionship for attendees, or even promote confidence and social development in young readers. We were tempted to reuse our last Library News picture of TTO regular Penelope to gain more attention for this piece. As we were informed in no uncertain terms, the success of said column can be attributed to, “People liking pictures of dogs.” Can’t argue with that logic.

On Thursday, we resume our intermittent mythical theme with DIY Dragon Eggs crafted from air dry clay, tin foil, and array of gemstones/decorative additions. We’re anticipating a lot of excitement over references to Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, and maybe even Game of Thrones (at which point we’d go, “Why in the world does a five-year-old know the name Daenerys Targaryen?!  I had to look that up”).

A free screening of Wreck it Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet, caps off the week.  Complementary popcorn included (yep, there we go with the snacks again). Six years after the original film, Ralph and Vanellope enter the world wide web after finding a newly installed WiFi router in their arcade. We’re guessing things don’t go exactly as planned. Or else it’d probably be called something to the effect of Ralph Goes Online and Everything is Cool.

Monday through Saturday, we’ll be holding daily reading draws and regularly scheduled programs like Baby Time (Tuesday), Gamers (Wednesday), and Tales for Twos and Threes (Thursday). Registration for all programs is now open. Drop in or call 905-227-2581.
