Beat boredom with book clubs at Thorold Public Library

Looking back on all our book clubs, our favourite would probably have to be Where the Crawdads Sing. Not because it was our favourite title necessarily, but because our coworker proceeded to make several references to it in the weeks that followed. Things like, “What was that title you did for book club? Song of Craw? and we’d be like, Yep. Thats exactly it. Every time it would be different, but always wrong. Anyway. Our transition to virtual book clubs started last week with our first meeting on The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. An excellent title, if you’ve yet to read it. Perhaps even more excellent if you have. Our coworker might call this one The Evening Museum. And then she’d probably ask if it was the same story as the movie. Because she would also think that was the correct title of that film.

Patrons are welcome to register for any individual book club or pick and choose attendance based on titles. Just not covers. You know we don’t do that kind of thing here. And you can’t pretend to be interested in book club in order to jump the line to read the latest Backman or Obama without having to sit on the holds list. We have fairly advanced scientific instruments designed for distinguishing between genuine interest and unbecoming holds line conduct, but we won’t bore you with all the technical details.

So, here is a list of our upcoming meetings:

January 28 at 6: The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

January 29 at 1:30: The Forgotten Daughter by Joanna Goodman

February 2 at 6: A Promised Land by Barack Obama

February 18 at 6: The Queen’s Gambit by Walter Trevis

February 25 at 6: Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

February 26 at 1:30: The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue

March 2 at 6: The Skin We’re in by Desmond Cole

March 18 at 6: Pretty Little Wife by Darby Kane

March 25 at 6: The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel

March 26 at 1:30: American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

After selecting the book club(s) one would like to attend and contacting the library (details below), patrons receive their book(s) via curbside pickup.

Zoom virtual meeting invitations are sent out 1-2 days prior to the event at your preferred email address.

Books are later returned via our bookdrop, open 24/7.

Remember that all returned material is isolated for at least five days before being checked in, so expect items to remain on your card for up to 10 days. If you prefer to participate in a book club outside of our scheduled offerings, sets can be borrowed upon request.

Available sets include When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, and From the Ashes by Jesse Thistle. Sets need to be checked out on a valid Libraries in Niagara Cooperative (LiNC) account and the requesting patron will maintain responsibility for the entire set. No pressure. Sets range from 8-10 copies.

Patrons interested in any form of book club can email [email protected] or phone 905- 227-2581.
