COLUMN: Pick up your next reading adventure safely at Thorold Library

Thorold News library columnist Rebecca Lazarenko is tired of writing announcements but has some important information to share
curbside

It seems that nearly every other week we make an announcement regarding library services under new regulations. We’re at an interesting communication impasse where we announce both changes to and continuations of service with the same urgency and importance. We have also perfected the announcement tripod of pre-announcement, announcement announcement, and post-announcement reminder - all whilst conceding that 45% of any announcement is a self-referential acknowledgement that you are, in fact, making an announcement. Also, filler. That’s very important to the success of any non-announcement. Gives it the air of a real announcement. So, in essence this is the same announcement as last month’s move to lockdown, but nonetheless worth expressly stating.

Yes, even with new provincial restrictions, our curbside pickup service continues.

If you’ve never used the service before, it’s important to note that our curbside pickup is completely contactless. We also ask (demand, really) that when you arrive for your pickup you maintain social distance. Masks are greatly appreciated. Yes, even outside. You may also note that our new curbside pickup doorbell is a video doorbell. Works the same as our previous, regular doorbell except we can now see you approaching and what jacket you chose that day and how the wind catches your hair when it’s breezy. Anyway. It’s generally less creepy than that description made it sound. Please still come.

The process of a curbside pickup appointment is quite simple. Patrons can put their items on hold via our online catalogue or give us a call to either collect your specifically requested material or curate a list based on reading preferences and general interest. We also provide curbside printing and photocopying services. Once your items are pulled/printed, you receive either an email or phone call to schedule your curbside pickup appointment. Once a patron has arrived for their appointment, they ring the bell, and their material is placed on a book cart at the parking lot entrance.

It’s also worth reminding that our bookdrop is open 24/7 and requires no special appointment. If there is someone already at the bookdrop, or picking up their curbside order when you arrive, please wait before approaching. You have a minute to spare. Youve already spent two on this wonderful announcement. Both are totally worth it.

All retuned items are quarantined for at least five days before checkin and turnaround for future borrowers. This takes longer for items to circulate, but its for the health and safety of all involved - so thats fair. Do we at least give the items our streaming service passwords for entertainment while they are in their self isolation bubbles? No. But they are welcome to buy their own subscription from any fines theyve accumulated over the years. Also, theyre books. So, reading.

Fines do not accumulate for the additional days your item is kept in quarantine - but it will remain on your card until it comes out of quarantine. Please only contact the library if an item is still on your card 10 days after its return. If you anticipate a problem with returning items, please contact us at 905-227-2581 or [email protected]. You can also use either of these methods to ask any other library related questions.
