Your article provided me with the name of the hotel (Welland Hotel) which I have just discovered my great, great-grandmother Ellen Cartmell (nee McDonald) worked at, as a laundress, according to the 1851 census.
Also, thanks to your help I am meeting Cathy Ker, another Cartmell descendant this weekend, as I am travelling to Thorold to do some more research and for the Thorold and Beaverdams Historical Society monthly meeting.
