LIVE: 'Fines and even prison time' in store for Canadians who break quaratine order, says PM

Quarantine act makes 14-day isolation manadatory

Update:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reminded Canadians returning from abroad that they now must comply with a 14-day quarantine order.

The government has implemented the Quarantine Act, which means Canadians who do not comply with the quarantine order could face "serious fines and even prison time."

Trudeau said too many people returning from abroad are still not complying with 14-day self-isolation

"A 14-day quarantine will be mandatory for all Canadians returning from abroad," he said.

Trudeau also warned Canadians about a "text scam" related to a new $2,000-a-month emergency income-loss benefit announced by the province on Wednesday.

Trudeau said the government's website is the best place "to find reliable information on everything we're doing."

The Prime Minister spoke to G20 leaders this morning.

"We're going to do whatever it takes," said Trudeau.

He said that means making sure the World Health Organization and public health agencies have the funding they need. He said it also means ramping up manufacturing capacity to produce items needed by the healthcare system.

"COVID-19 is a global crisis that demands a global response," said Trudeau.

In response to U.S. President Donald Trump's statement Wednesday that he wants the U.S. economy to be opened up by Easter, Trudeau said Canada will continue to work with the U.S. and continue to ensure border measures that are in place are followed.

"We will continue to follow the best advice of the scientific community to keep Canadians safe as a piority," said Trudeau.
