LIVE: Premier Doug Ford says number of COVID-19 tests in Ontario 'unacceptable'

Ford says he wants to see Ontario perform 13,000 tests for coronavirus each day; province announces more supports for essential workers

Premier Doug Ford is demanding to see 13,000 COVID-19 tests performed each day beginning immediately, citing an "unacceptable" number of tests in the province over the past few days. 

The province announced Wednesday that it will implement new measures to keep essential workers safe, including the deployment of additional employment standards officers, health and safety specialists and workplace inspectors. 

Ontario will also accelerate critical construction projects such as hospitals and healthcare facilities by extending working hours. 

Ford used Wednesday daily address to announce that essential workers will have two days off - Good Friday and Easter Sunday - during the long weekend. 

Wednesday will also see the distribution of free coffee to truckers at all OnRoute locations in Ontario.

Premier Doug Ford holds a press conference today at 1 p.m. from Queen's Park in Toronto.

He will be joined by Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, and Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development, to make an announcement.

The press conference will be streamed live on Ford's YouTube channel, and Village Media will carry the livestream feed.
